Controller Succession Crisis Resolved

A long-established mechanical contractor faced a significant challenge when its Controller of more than 25 years departed unexpectedly in December—arguably the most critical time of year for the finance function. The organization was suddenly responsible for year-end close, audit preparation, tax support, and day-to-day accounting operations with little documentation and no succession plan in place.
Our Solution
Orion Solutions Group responded immediately by placing an interim Controller with construction industry expertise to stabilize the situation. The interim leader quickly assessed existing processes, documented key procedures, maintained financial reporting timelines, and successfully guided the company through year-end close and the annual audit. Along the way, several process improvements were implemented to strengthen the finance function and reduce operational risk.
At the same time, Orion conducted a targeted search for a permanent Controller with deep construction accounting experience. Within a compressed timeline, we identified and recruited a qualified candidate whose background aligned closely with the company's size, complexity, and operational needs.
To ensure continuity, the interim Controller partnered closely with the incoming Controller during the transition, creating a smooth handoff and minimizing disruption to the business
Client Outcome
The company-maintained business continuity during a critical period, successfully completed its audit and year-end requirements, improved documentation and processes, and secured a long-term finance leader without interrupting operations.
